are based on the Stewart-Hamilton principle. Different types of indicators (dyes and radioisotopes) are used, and their varying concentrations are determined either from arterial sampled blood 1, 2 or by precordial scanning.3-9 Combined right and left heart catheterization provides a more direct measurement of pulmonary blood volume in man, by the indicator-dilution technic. In methods already described,1 2 the pulmonary artery and the left atrium are used as sites of injection of the indicators, sampling being made in a peripheral artery. Milnor, Jose, and McCaff1 use one indicator, which is injected successively in the pulmonary artery and left atrium, or vice versa, whereas the technic of Dock et al.2 requires the simultaneous delivery into the circulation of two indicators, one for each injection site. The purpose of this paper is to report and discuss the results obtained with a technic that does not require two indicators or two successive injections of the same indicator, but substitutes peripheral arterial sampling for central sampling (pulmonary artery and left atrium), dye being injected near the right atrium.

مقایسه تأثیر بیهوشی کامل وریدی و بیهوشی استنشاقی بر تست عملکرد ریوی

Background & Aim: Every surgery is followed by some changes in postoperative pulmonary function tests which can dramatically influence this period. Although the type of the surgery and its vicinity to diaphragm are the main determinants of these changes, anesthetic techniques are also responsible. Among different probable factors through which anesthesia could influence postoperative pulmon...

THE EFFECTS OF CAPTOPRIL ON PULMONARY AND SYS TEMIC ARTERIAL PRESSURES IN HIGHALTITUDE PULMONARY HYPERTENSION

The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effect of captopril on both systemic (P.a) and pulmonary arterial pressures (PPA) in patients with high-altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH). Seventeen patients (mean age 44±6.8 years) with HAPH and mild to moderate systemic arterial hypertension were included in the study. All patients underwent right heart catheterization with measurem...

The Pulmonary Blood

The measurement of blood volume in the pulmonary vascular bed during life became theoretically feasible with the introduction of indicator dilution methods by Stewart (1) and Hamilton, Moore, Kinsman and Spurling (2). The principles and formulas set forth by these investigators have since undergone extensive scrutiny by theoretical analysis, in circulation models, and in vivo. As a result of th...

Dexamethasone vs Hydrocortisone in Management of Exacerbated Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Different types of corticosteroids with different characteristics, such as hydrocortisone and dexamethasone, have been used in treatment of exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease but drug of choice unclear. The main goal of present study was to compare the efficacy of hydrocortisone and dexamethasone on clinical symptoms, peak expiratory flow, oxidative stress factors and...

Determinants of pulmonary vascular volume: recruitment versus distensibility.

This study attempted to evaluate the relative roles of vessel distensibility and vessel recruitment in the changes in pulmonary blood volume induced by changes in pulmonary intravascular pressure. Pulmonary blood volume was determined by a double-injection indicator-dilution technique in eight anesthetized open-chest dogs with a right and left ventricular bypass which allowed independent contro...
